Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just use “overlays” to make your site accessible?

Accessibility experts do not consider accessibility overlays to be accessible. Some collect data. Most put the onus on users to change settings on the web site. True accessibility accepts the settings the user already has on their browser or the tools a user comes into the site using with minimal friction.

We are designing our first news product with principles of universal design and thinking about inclusive tech that will not be disruptive to users along the way. We want to be innovative in making accessibility for news better, but we also want to respect our users and their needs.

Is Equal Access Public Media publishing news yet?

No. EAPM has a two-part mission: to publish news in an accessible manner and to create accessible jobs.

We wouldn’t be completing our mission if we published news without also hiring journalists to cover the news, editors to edit that news, and accessibility experts to make sure our web publication is accessible.

What will it take to start publishing?

It will take money to start publishing news. That comes in the form of grants, corporate sponsors, and most importantly, donations from individuals. Donations from individuals make up the biggest source of revenue for nonprofits like EAPM.

Does EAPM have a publication launch plan?

Yes! EAPM’s plan is to launch a weekday publication covering national news when we have enough revenue to begin hiring full-time journalists to cover the national government, as well as enough money to begin hiring part-time staff and freelancers to build out our newsroom and operations.

How much does it cost to launch EAPM’s first publication?

A launch depends on fundraising. To run a weekday publication for one year with five full-time team members and all the tools they need, EAPM needs to raise $500,000. Fundraising is an ongoing effort, but we won’t start publishing until we know we can hire and support people in accessible jobs.
